Choose one action to practise when you have some space in the day. This is not an age-based checklist, and independence does not mean doing everything without support.
The action
One item of clothing: ____________________
The small part my child will try: ____________________
The parts an adult will help with: ____________________
Example: “I will put the sock over the toes. My child will try pulling the top upwards.” Choose an action that fits your child’s current abilities.
Set it up
A comfortable, stable place to sit if needed: ____________________
Clothing that is comfortable and easy to handle: ____________________
A relaxed time to try: ____________________
A picture, sign or short phrase that may help: ____________________
A choice, if useful
Two suitable items I can offer: ____________________
How my child can show a preference: ____________________
Pointing, looking, signing and speaking can all communicate a choice. If choosing makes the task harder, skip that part.
During practice
- Show the action without rushing.
- Give the agreed help.
- Notice a specific effort, such as finding an opening.
- Stop or finish together when it is becoming too much.
What we learned
Something that made the task easier: ____________________
Something uncomfortable or confusing: ____________________
What we will change next time: ____________________
For further practical guidance, see NHS advice on supporting dressing skills. Persistent difficulties are a reason to ask for support, not to make practice tougher.
